How to Calculate Facade Scaffolding Area (m²) — With Belgrade Examples

Facade scaffolding is almost always priced per square metre (m²). That makes the area the first number you need — without it you can't compare quotes, plan a budget or check whether a price is fair. This guide shows how scaffolding area is calculated, with two real-world Belgrade examples, and the mistakes that most often inflate the bill.

The Basic Formula

Scaffolding m² = total scaffold length × scaffold height

• Length — the sum of every side of the building being worked on. At each outside corner the scaffold wraps around the wall, so roughly 1 m is usually added per corner.
• Height — from the ground to the highest working point (eaves, cornice, parapet), plus about 1 m for the guardrail above the top working level.

Important: scaffolding area is not the same as facade area for painting. Windows and doors are not subtracted — the scaffold stands in front of the whole wall regardless of openings.

Example 1: A Family House

A 10 × 12 m house, 7 m to the eaves, with the facade done on all four sides.

• Perimeter: 2 × (10 + 12) = 44 m
• Corners: 4 × 1 m = 4 m → total scaffold length 48 m
• Scaffold height: 7 m + 1 m = 8 m
• Area: 48 × 8 = 384 m²

Example 2: A Terraced Building in the City Centre

A typical case in Stari Grad or Vračar: the building sits between two neighbours, so only the street facade is renovated. The facade is 18 m long and 16 m to the cornice.

• Scaffold length: 18 m (no free corners)
• Scaffold height: 16 m + 1 m = 17 m
• Area: 18 × 17 = 306 m²

Here the facade opens straight onto the pavement, so when you plan scaffolding in Stari Grad, you'll usually also need protective sheeting and a safe walkway for pedestrians.

What Isn't in the m², but Affects the Price

• Rental period — longer rentals generally get better rates.
• Assembly and dismantling — either included in the quote or charged separately.
• Transport — depends on the distance to the site.
• Protective sheeting — needed when people walk underneath or when the work creates dust and debris.
• Use of public space — if the scaffold stands on the pavement, approval from the municipality is usually required.

The Most Common Calculation Mistakes

1. Forgetting the corners — on the example house that's 4 m of length, or 32 m² missed.
2. Height without the guardrail — if the scaffold stops at the eaves, the top level can't be worked on safely.
3. Subtracting windows — that applies to painting, not scaffolding.
4. Measuring by eye — being 2 m off on height across a 48 m length means almost 100 m² of difference.
